Mixed Media: Watercolor, Markers, and Pen

Al Pacino

I created this picture of Al Pacino using a muted complementary color scheme of yellow and purple. It is also a mixed media creation in which I used markers, watercolors, and pens. I was going through an experimental phase with color and different tools. This work is part of a mini-series of celebrity portraits. I used what some call a “splash technique” to create the background for this picture, then built the image right on top of the background. I made sure to leave some areas for the background to show through. I have incorporated this technique into my personal style.

With this project, I created a magazine ad that portrayed women ready for a night out on the town with a strong, classy, elegant, and universal look. Using Adobe Photoshop, I created the ad by cropping the original photo, working on the lighting of the image, and constructing a layout that speaks volumes on its own with little text to explain it.

Adobe Illustrator

I used Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Indesign to create this two-page spread. The first spread depicts the comedian performing on a stage that also appears to be a doorway with the door coming off the hinges. This and Pryor’s black and white suit symbolize his work to break down color barriers through his performances. The cord of the microphone creates the image of a step that Pryor built for comedians coming up behind him. There is also a play on words in the main title. With the second page spread, I carried over the layout from the first page with the color bars, and I used the brown block to insert a quote from the article. I also included a marker render of Pryor on the far right to balance the spread, then repeated the same illustration of the door coming off the hinges, this :me to look like a gravestone.

I created a portfolio magazine to showcase my artwork. I constructed the magazine to be two in one; when viewers reach the middle, it creates a full spread poster advertisement. they won’t have to rip it out, you just flip it to see side b. The magazine demonstrates the various sides of my design, and I thought this would be a cool way to display my work. Side A depicts my clean, professional side, while Side B shows a more casual approach. Together, they provide a strong overall view of my design style.

This project encompasses a full-spread magazine advertisement for Star Apparel, a clothing line with urban pieces on a global scale. Because the company wished to target buyers from 18 to 35, I decided to use skulls, angel wings with skeletons, graphite, skaters, and beautiful models. The ad is hip-hop meets rock-n-roll (think Run DMC and Aerosmith). I used Adobe Photoshop to manipulate the models onto the backdrop image, then layered other graphics to make the spread. After drawing and inking the background image by hand, I scanned it into the computer where the layout was created. A fellow artist and photography acquaintance helped me with the models’ photo shoot. I then took those images into Photoshop and pieced together the spread.

I created a portfolio magazine to showcase my artwork. This is Side B of my doubled sided self promotional magazine. With Side B, I went with a casual dressed look, to show off my many different design facets also using a bolder font to display this.

This client is a motorcycle photographer who travels across the country to different biker events and sells custom merchandise at these events. He asked me to create a few posters for his company. I constructed a layout and manipulated the photos and the logo, keeping the concept simple and readable with a pop of color. After all, popcorn is nothing without the butter (the color). This is clean design with a little fun.

This was an experimental work of art. I re-create this falcon to be semi-realistic with an abstract spontaneous back drop. I use a splattering method for the background, and used watercolor & pen for the falcon in the foreground.

In this image I wanted to mix a Jazz band with a Dj, and a lounge singer. I used abstract design for the background and created the Jazz scene in the foreground.
